“Mary” is the proper noun of the person who receives the act of “invite”. Therefore “Mary” is the direct object of the sentence.

The direct object is the answer to the questions “what/who receives the action?”:

For example:

Question: What is David Repairing? : his car (“his car” is the object receiving the action “repair”)

2. He invited Mary to the party.

Question: Who did he invite? : Mary (“Mary” is the object receiving the action “invite”)

Indirect objects are answers to the questions “for whom/for what/for what?”
