What is HDPE?

HDPE (High-density polyethylene) also known as PEHD (polyethylene high-density) is a high-density thermoplastic material. HDPE is known for its great strength-to-density ratio. The density of HDPE can be in the range of 0.93-0.97 g/cm3 or 970 kg/m3. Although the density of HDPE is only higher than low-density polyethylene, because HDPE has less branching, it has strong intermolecular forces and therefore has a higher tensile strength than LDPE (Low-density polyethylene) – low density thermoplastic material.

For almost 50 years, HDPE pipes have been used to transport liquids. With the ability to withstand aggressive chemicals without corrosion and leakage as well as strong welds, polyethylene (PE) has been considered the ideal material for the gas industry.
