The concept of Triac

In non-resistive load applications, the 3Q triac is more efficient than the 4Q triac. Because the 3Q triac does not require protection circuitry.

Structure of the triac

Triac consists of 5 semiconductor layers creating a PNPN structure similar to that of a thyristor in both directions between terminals T1 and T2.

Therefore, it can conduct current in both directions between T1 and T2.

The triac can be thought of as equivalent to two thyristors connected in parallel in opposite directions.

To control the triac, just provide a pulse to the G pin of the triac.

Working principle of Triac

The triac is capable of controlling the current to open the conduction by both the current entering the control terminal (positive pulse) and the current going out of the control terminal (negative pulse).

To open the Triac, a negative control current must be greater than a positive control current.

In fact, if you want to ensure the symmetry of the current through the Triac, it is better to use positive current.

It is easier to understand, like a specialized electrical switch to control AC equipment. Its pins are also roughly equivalent to that of an electronic switch.

Use a multimeter to measure and test the triac. Follow these steps:

1. Step 1: Adjust the meter switch to the 100K high resistance scale.

2. Step 2: Connect the positive probe of the meter to the MT1 pin of the Triac and the negative probe to the MT2 pin of the triac.

The clock hand will go up and give a high resistance result.

The connection can be reversed.

3. Step 3: Continue to specialize the selector switch to the low-resistance scale. Connect MT1 and port G to the meter’s positive probe and MT2 to the meter’s negative probe.

The meter hand will show low resistance result.

Follow the above steps well, proving that the triac is working normally and without any problems.

It should be noted that the above method is not applicable to those Triggers that require high gate voltage and current to activate.
